How America’s Private Boat Marketplace came to be

I decided to sell my own boat and quickly realized there should be a simpler, more affordable option for private sellers. I don’t work a traditional full-time schedule, so I have the flexibility to clean my boat, take photos, answer questions, and show it to potential buyers myself. Because of that, I wanted to keep more of the money from my sale rather than pay someone else to handle work I was able and willing to do. Brokers absolutely have their place, and they provide a valuable service for people who need them. They do a lot of the legwork and can make the selling process easier. But not every boat owner needs that level of service. For private sellers, the current options can come with high listing fees and complicated experiences. That’s why we created this platform. Our goal isn’t to squeeze as much money as possible out of boat owners. We want to offer a simple, affordable, less-is-more way to list and sell your boat\. We also want to work hard to weed out scam listings and help create a marketplace where buyers can feel more confident that they’re looking at real boats from real private sellers. No unnecessary complexity. No inflated fees. Just a straightforward place for private boat owners to connect with potential buyers. **Simple. Affordable. Built for private boat owners.**

For private sellers, the current options can come with high listing fees and complicated experiences. That’s why we created this platform.

Who are we?

As of right now, this is a two-person boat — and we are okay with that. When the need arises to bring on help, we absolutely will. For now, American Hull is built and operated by two women who are boaters first and a business owners second. We are Danie and Amy! The idea for this website came from my own experience trying to sell a boat privately. I tried two major boat-selling platforms outside of social media and received zero response. I paid to boost my listing after another round of zero response on one of those major platforms. I also had my boat listed on social media for over a year, only to be told by others that my listing wasn’t even showing up for them. That led me to ask a simple question: Why should private sellers have to spend hundreds of dollars to list their boat, only to be asked to pay even more for upgrades and boosts just to be seen? So, I decided to build another option and asked Amy to partner with me. Our goal with American Hull is to offer a more regional, affordable platform designed with private boat sellers in mind. We are investing our own time and money into building something that we believe can provide a better opportunity for individuals who simply want their listings to be seen. Is it fancy? Not yet. Does it have hundreds of filter options and every feature imaginable? No and we do not plan on it. But this is just the beginning. The platform will continue to improve, and new features and filters will be added over time; however, not to overwhelm or take away from affordability. The goal is simple as a seller: your listing is your listing. You shouldn’t have to keep paying more and more just for the chance to be seen. The goal for the buyer is seeing boats in your area or at least within your region. American Hull was created by a private seller, for private sellers — because sometimes the best ideas come from someone experiencing the same frustrations you are.

Selling a boat privately can seem complicated, especially because the requirements for titles, registrations, bills of sale, and trailers can vary from state to state. American Hull is here to help point you in the right direction. 1. Gather Your Paperwork Before listing your boat, make sure you have the necessary documents ready: Boat Title: If your state requires boat titles, make sure you have the original title and understand the requirements for transferring ownership. Registration: Some states may use registration documents instead of titles for certain boats. Bill of Sale: A proper bill of sale should typically include the boat's make, model, year, Hull Identification Number (HIN), sale price, date of sale, and signatures from both the buyer and seller. Trailer Paperwork: If a trailer is included, remember that it may have separate title and registration requirements. Lien Release: If there is an outstanding loan on the boat, you may need to obtain a lien release before the sale can be completed. 2. Prepare and Price Your Boat A clean, well-presented boat can make a big difference. Take quality photos, clean the boat thoroughly, make minor repairs when reasonable, and gather maintenance and service records. When setting your price, look at similar boats for sale in your area. Pay attention to the boat's year, condition, equipment, hours, and overall market demand. 3. Create a Great Listing The more information you provide, the easier it is for serious buyers to decide whether your boat is right for them. Include: Year, make, and model Length Engine information and hours Hull Identification Number when appropriate Trailer information Recent maintenance or upgrades Known issues or repairs needed Clear, current photos A detailed and honest description 4. Know Your State Requirements Boat sale and ownership-transfer requirements vary by state. Before completing a sale, check with the appropriate agency in your state, which may be the Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Parks, or another boating authority. Always verify the current requirements for your state before completing the sale. Our Goal Selling your boat privately shouldn't be more complicated or expensive than it needs to be. American Hull was created by a private boat seller who experienced the frustrations of trying to sell a boat on larger platforms. Our goal is to provide an affordable place to list your boat and connect with real buyers. Your boat. Your listing. Your sale.
